With these glasses (OD5+), the light power passing through the lens is at least 100 000 times lower.
Optical density (OD) describes how strongly a material absorbs the light power passing through it. It is the base-10 logarithm of the ratio between the light power striking the material and the power leaving it — so each step of OD means another factor of ten.
