How to work with a laser safely and without complications?

Tattoo and PMU removal is a precise procedure where client safety and treatment effectiveness go hand in hand.

Even the best laser for PMU and tattoo removal doesn’t deliver expected results if we don’t follow proper working principles.

In this article, you’ll learn how to work with a laser professionally and safely, minimizing the risk of complications after tattoo or permanent makeup removal and achieving satisfying results.

Proper client and skin preparation

Safety begins before you turn on the laser. Start with:

  • Client consultation – skin conditions, allergies, previous treatments, medications taken, whether they prepared their skin for removal according to previously given instructions.
  • Skin and pigment assessment – skin thickness and type, pigment location, its color and depth of placement.
  • Test patch – a small test area allows you to check skin reaction and minimizes the risk of complications.
  • Eye protection – safety glasses for both client and operator are mandatory.

💡 Tip: within one session, we recommend removing tattoos with a total area no larger than an A4 sheet.

Selecting laser parameters for tattoo and PMU removal

Each skin type and pigment requires individual laser parameter settings:

  • Pulse power – the higher the energy dose, the more intensive the effect on pigment, but too high a dose can damage the skin, so you need to select the appropriate value to avoid harming the client.

  • Pulse frequency – the higher the frequency, the faster the laser emits successive pulses.

  • Spot size – changes depending on the distance from which we perform the shot. The smaller the spot, the more energy focuses on the pigment, because all energy acts on a smaller skin surface. A larger spot disperses energy, so the pigment receives less of it.

💡 Tip: in most cases, the optimal spot size is 5–6 mm. Always check the spot size on black cardboard before starting treatment and when changing shot position.

Working technique and laser movements

A professional approach to PMU and tattoo removal also includes how you handle the device:

  • Work evenly and systematically – avoid overlapping pulses in the same spot multiple times.

  • Perform laser shots at a 90° angle to the skin surface.

  • Maintain constant distance from the skin so energy is absorbed evenly.

  • Monitor skin reaction – slight redness is natural, blisters or severe redness may signal tissue overheating.

💡 Tip: initially use lower laser parameters to avoid excessive pigment heating that could break epidermal continuity, and increase them in later sessions when pigment in the upper skin layers has been removed.

Skin cooling and healing

Proper post-treatment care reduces the risk of complications:

  • Cooling with compress immediately after treatment for 45 minutes – reduces pain, swelling, and burn risk.

  • Provide written instructions for the client – including avoiding sun exposure, using soothing ointments.

💡 Tip: even the best equipment requires proper skin care for maximum and safe results!

Combining methods for better effects

Often we support laser treatment with additional removal methods:

  • Remover – this method resembles the permanent makeup process, but instead of pigment, a special substance is introduced into the skin that activates inflammation so the body can then remove the pigment.

  • Microneedling – we can use this when dealing with pigment trapped in fibrotic skin.

  • Remover + microneedling – this combination stimulates skin regeneration and improves its elasticity, reducing scars while supporting the natural pigment elimination process.

💡 Tip: combining laser + remover (for PMU and tattoos) allows precise and effective action on difficult pigments and scars, but when planning further removal, you should assess the skin after each removal session and select the appropriate method.

Monitoring effects and documentation

Professional laser work requires keeping documentation. You need to have:

  • Before and after photos – allow tracking progress and showing clients the results.

  • Notes on laser settings – laser power, pulse duration, wavelength, skin reaction.

  • Scheduled regular consultations with the client – to assess skin healing and plan subsequent removal sessions.
